Great hornbill (Buceros bicornis)
The Great hornbill is a magnificent forest bird found in tropical and subtropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, where it inhabits evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. One of the largest hornbills in the world, it can reach up to 1.2 meters in length, with a wingspan exceeding 1.5 meters. Its diet consists mainly of fruits, along with small animals and insects, making it an important seed disperser for many forest trees. Recognized by its massive yellow and black casque above the bill and its powerful wingbeats, it is a symbol of the ancient forests it inhabits. In Vietnam, it survives mainly in protected areas, including Cát Tiên National Park and parts of the Central Highlands.
Calao bicorne (Buceros bicornis)
Le calao bicorne est un oiseau forestier majestueux présent dans les régions tropicales et subtropicales d’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est, où il fréquente les forêts sempervirentes et semi-sempervirentes. Comptant parmi les plus grands calaos au monde, il peut atteindre 1,2 m de longueur et posséder une envergure dépassant 1,5 m. Son alimentation est principalement composée de fruits, mais aussi de petits animaux et d’insectes, ce qui en fait un important disperseur de graines pour de nombreuses espèces d’arbres forestiers. Reconnaissable à son immense casque jaune et noir surmontant son bec et à son vol puissant aux battements d’ailes profonds, il est devenu un symbole des forêts anciennes qu’il habite. Au Vietnam, il subsiste principalement dans des zones protégées comme le parc national de Cát Tiên et certaines régions des hauts plateaux du Centre.
